Class met in the Danger Shop today, which was modified to resemble a pool hall.

"Welcome to the unofficial Land of the Hustle," Constantine proclaimed, spreading his arms wide. "Today, we're learning how to shoot pool and take the money of idiots with more money than sense."

"Pool hustlers use deception and misdirection in order to win cash from inexperienced players -- or from skilled players inexperienced with the world of hustling. Now, there's a few different options for a skilled hustler, and some things to watch out for if you don't want to end up the wrong side of the bet."

"A hustler will usually play with a low-quality 'house' cue stick provided by the pool hall, or an unadorned but high-quality personal cue that looks like one, known as a 'sneaky pete.' Or, with the nascence of local competitive league play in recent years, may play with a flashy-looking but evidently low-end personal cue, to give the impression that the hustler is a beginning league player. They will typically play a game or two for 'fun' or for low bets -- a beer or equivalent amount of cash -- in order to check out the opponent and give the impression that money can easily be won, often losing on purpose with the intent of winning a much larger wager later against a predictably overconfident opponent. This is known as sandbagging or dumping."

"They will pocket some difficult and impressive shots or make surprisingly secure safety shots, the ones crucial for winning, while missing many simple ones, thus making early victories appear to be sheer luck and may pretend to be intoxicated, unintelligent, or otherwise impaired. When betting on trick shots, they may intentionally miss the first or several times and lose a small amount, then raise the bet to an amount well beyond the loss and succeed at the well-practiced feat."

"Many of these ploys can easily be mistaken for the honest faults of a less-than-exceptional player. The engendered doubt and uncertainty is what allows hustling to succeed, with the 'mistakes' ceasing when a significant amount of money is at stake."

"Americans are partial to Eight-ball, so we'll start with that," he said, handwavily going over the rules. "So grab a partner, and work on your game."

The projector was set up in the classroom today, which could only mean one thing.

"Creative writing actually take many forms," Aphra told the class as she looked for the remote, which you'd think she wouldn't have lost track of in five minutes, but you'd be surprised.

"I'm extremely fond of dirty limericks myself," Isabela said, surprising absolutely no one. "Which is why we'll be watching a film about a famous poet."

So many notes today. I like it better when Wednesday mornings are short but…I suppose this will keep me busy for a bit.

So. Yesterday was much busier than usual but classes were mostly the same at the school. There were no teachers for Ethics and a movie for Basic Training.

Still nothing from the dorms but the porg helped with the party, it seems. That’s good. There is so much from the party and it makes him happy to be useful.

So, on to the town. Most things happened at Caritas but Sairis was selling charms at Liliana’s shop.

Everything else happened at Kitty’s Icebreaker Party which only had ice in the drinks. I think.

There were specials at the bar. Caleb, Flint, Henry, Henry, Arden, Adrian’s cat Boston (or is Adrian Boston’s person?), Jon, and Raiden all got drinks. Steve and Bucky discussed dinosaurs and the squirrels are snickering at that. Pam had a drink and talked to Rey about not playing the game and Adrian about swamps and groves. Liliana had a lovely dress which Jon noticed before discussing the trip. Sairis didn’t even make it into the back room before Harley wanted to know what squares he could fill.

And then there was the game where we all tried to fill our cards, with varying success.

So much icebreaking bingo )

Does anyone like the cold? Kitty, why did you put that on the card? Did you know nobody would ever be able to mark off that space?

Right. Well. That was a lot of notes and I’m going to get a coffee now. But perhaps we ought to do something similar sometime in the future.

I hope you all enjoy your Wednesdays.

Gambit was, in fact, absolutely late getting to class today.

"Right," he said, not missing a beat as he strode across the otherwise unprogrammed room and hit some buttons. A movie theater appeared around them, with a little cliche popcorn bucket and soda cup dancing on the screen. "Movie day. Have fun. Try not to learn anything stupid."

He was such a good teacher. No really!

Sairis rushed in a little late, having spent too much time reading during class, but got everything up and running efficiently, and even carefully made a bit of tea.

He had enough charms and things by now that he was confident in offering them up, so he placed a sign in the window:

Charms for sale or barter: fertility, anti-fertility, luck, focus
Others by commission. No curses.

Yes, your Ethics teachers were checking to see how long you'd stay.

Yes, they were watching.

What up, island? It's me, ya girl Arden Finch, reminding you not only about yesterday's news but also Ms. Pryde-Barton's party tonight at Caritas. I'll be there, who am I gonna see tonight?

But, before we get to tonight, let's talk about yesterday, starting with School. Squirrel! had us napping and, honestly, that's a great start to any school day. Then Beginning Gourmet Cooking Techniques brought us to a butcher shop to learn different cuts of meat. And, of course, Tasks were warned to not open their assignments? And there's something about milk and microwaves? The squirrels aren't giving a lot of detail, but uh. Don't nuke your milk, kids, a little tip from me.

No Dorms, I bet Lydia is making a mint selling y'all privacy charms, but in Town, there were new kittens born at Furnado - awww! - and a ball on display at Infinite Constortium. What kind of ball? Nobody knows? Okay, sure, I'm sorry I asked. The staff at the Clinic was dealing with the time shift the same way we all do: poorly.

But that's all I've got for you today, so good luck and have fun, Fandom! This is ya girl, Arden Finch, signing off and leaving you with a little music to get you in the party mood for tonight: Party Rock Anthem by LMFAO, Lauren Bennett, and GoonRock. Bye for now, Fandom!

Walks remained an important part of Octavia's daily private island routine. But this morning it was a little... different.

Because Lucifer was with her. And he was not a woods person, so that made the moment a little more special. (Also meant there was unlikely to be any tree hugging. And that Octavia was more likely to keep to the actual paths.)

"You good so far?" she asked, once they'd made it out far enough that the woods had fully enveloped them.

Kitty had put a lot of thought into the party tonight, so she'd tried to give people conversation starters for the icebreaker party. So there were random decorative fish hanging from the ceiling. Just a nonsense thing people might comment on. And there were plenty of drinks!

SPECIALS
New Friend
Old Friend
Flirtini
Public Enemy #1

And upon arriving, everyone would be able to grab a pen and a bingo card, which had very simple instructions:

Find people who can check off the squares!
Write their names down, get a bingo!
Person with the most bingos gets their tab cleared for the night
!

Come one, come all! Strike up some conversations! Make some friends! At least learn some names!

Stark had extra strong coffees for everyone at the clinic today on account of the time change. He, after all these years, did not understand the reasoning behind it.

"Extra caffeeine," he said, placing the drinks down. "In case it's needed." His, of course, also had excessive amounts of sugar.

"Everyone doing all right?"

The nurses mostly shrugged in acknowledgement. Stabby smacked his claws against the glass.

"He doesn't have a schedule to keep to and he still hates time changes," one nurse said.

The clinic was open but maybe kind of tired.

Some days, the store got historical artifacts on incalculable worth, like Kayla's music box or the Thran book. Other days, it got fascinating new magical puzzles and treasures that left her intrigued and mystified. Still other days, it received creepy clockwork dolls or hideous monsters with the heads of baby dolls.

And then there were days like today, when they got something that basically looked like...junk? Or, at least, something you could find at any toyshop in the US.

She stared at the ball, willed it to do anything interesting, and then stuck it in the display window. Perhaps some sports enthusiast would show up and take it off her hands.

When the students got to their simulations today, they'd each find themselves in a room with a simulated Kitty. Notably, there were also two microwaves set on tables, with a jug of milk atop each, and a task.kitty was holding a timer, which she started when they entered the room.

"You don't want to open the task yet," Kitty told them.

The class met this week at Portalocity again, this time to head out to a local butcher's shop in a lovely market.

"In future, we will be discussing how to cut meat," Hannibal began, "but there are any number of different meats you may encounter. Different cuts of different animals are useful for different things, and it's important to know how to make the most of them. And even given the overall qualities of a species, the flavor and texture of meat on an animal varies depending upon which part of the body it comes from. Also, different strains of species have different flavors, and their diet can make a very large difference." As did their frame of mind upon death, but that tended to distress people.

He led them toward the butchery to one side of the building. "I have arranged for the butchers to show you the various cuts of beef, pork, and lamb; where on the carcass they come from; and how to acquire them should you be performing your own butchery. Then we'll be moving to the stall next to it, which I have rented temporarily so that I can show you how the various cuts cook up. There won't be time for you to cook yourselves today, but I'll be feeding you. Provided you pay attention while I work." This was still, after all, a class.

Jon waved tiredly at the class. He'd reserved the Danger Shop for this period, but there was nothing in it so far; he was fiddling with the controls. "I, um. I apologize for last week. I got...well. Distracted." He cleared his throat. "I hope you all enjoyed Greece. That said, one of the things suggested to preserve focus is getting enough sleep. Which Daylight Saving Time does not help with. So."

He finally got it to do what he wanted, and around them appeared a...well, a sort of plush and padded cat tower, if the cats were human-sized. There were tunnels and cubbies and all kinds of places to hide. Or to climb around and play if you were so inclined.

"Today's class is for napping. If you don't feel like doing that, you can use it for exercise, which as we've discussed is also good for focus."

Just don't climb on him, please. He was going to be sleeping.

The kitten let him give it head scritches this morning, but balked at anything further than that. Caleb thought that might be the highlight of his shift but then he glanced into one of the other cats' cages and noticed a few extra occupants.

"Hey did y'all know this cat was pregnant?"

The vet tech paused in their own morning rounds. "She's pregnant?"

"Well not anymore, unless she ain't done yet."

Caleb had more work to do but was of course distracted by brand new kittens.

Morning, everybody. I don't know what time it is and it's still dark, so happy time change to us all.

Quiet day yesterday: Gregorith was dealing with a rogue butterfly at the museum, and Rey dropped Anakin's kids off after a trip with all of their limbs attached. Which is nothing I've asked a babysitter about but maybe I should.

That's all I've got. Have caffeine. Come to my party.

Steven and Marc's birthday was tomorrow, which meant that today, Watts had spent the afternoon in the kitchen making a pie.

That pie now sat on the kitchen island, along with two plates, forks, and a serving knife. And of course, a recently-opened bottle of bourbon and two glasses. Watts sat in one of the chairs, checking on his mobile telephone to make sure all of his plans for Steven tomorrow were in place.

Tonight, though? Tonight wasn't for Steven.

Rey had taken Juliet and Christopher home this weekend. It gave Anakin a break, and it gave her some opportunity to show them the galaxy, specifically Jedi-related parts of the galaxy. And to teach them some things. She felt like she didn't suck at teaching as much these days? Or maybe she just really didn't want to screw up her Master's kids and was trying harder.

She reached out to let Anakin know when they were back and headed to his house (as if he couldn't tell through the Force) and walked the kids up to the front door.

Gregorith went through the latter half of his routine at work without realizing there was a butterfly chilling on one of his horns, apparently unconcerned with it's resting place being so mobile.

It wasn't until he caught his reflection in one of the glass displays that he noticed.

"How long have you been there?"

He took a quick selfie to send back home before heading back to the butterfly room. Fortunately the insect did not make like a cat and make a break for it the second a phone's camera was put into use.
