Ah, yes, what better way to follow up a day heavy on war stuff than a jello shot party in what was essentially a hotel room! But, look, the Wednesday night jello room parties were just a tradition at this point, and Summer practically centered the first half of her trips around making them happen, so she was going to be very disappointed if no one even bothered to show up.

She was going to have a very rough Thursday if she had to do all these jello shots by herself (minus the one or two she could convince Barry to choke down).

So the mass texts to everyone had been sent out, as well as texts to Annie and Rey to show off the jello shot spread and show off what they were missing (with an added text to Annie that went something along the lines of seriously, though, u good? do you need anything? everything cool?), and she just had to finish with the set up. There was some beer and sodas and whatever leftover liquor didn't go into the shots and wine (because France) and some moddable snacks, but, of course, most of the attention was in the jello shots, which included some apple cider ones featuring cider from the countryside and chocolate covered strawberries with chocolate from the local chocolatier. Pears made an appearance in the line up, as did pumpkin. Of course there was champagne, a chocolate eclair, and.....mac and cheese....but, you know, with fancy local cheeses, because that made it better.

Look, just because they were in France, didn't mean you were free from at least That One Shot.

So it was time to party! Chaperones only! Summer will pay Rosa good money to make sure students stay out.

(She would have roped Goose and Sidon into it, but she knew them both well enough to know that while they did cut impressive figures as bouncers, she was pretty sure they would just encourage just letting every one in).

"Hi!" Summer, ever the proper hostess, greeted the newcomer with a bright grin and an awkward pause because she definitely remembered this guy coming into the bar at some point, but beyond that, she was drawing a little bit of a blank, but it was fine! She could work through it. "Thanks for coming! Help yourself to drinks and shots and food, there's plenty!"

“Thank you,” Cutter was actually prepared to try some more shots this time, “I think I might try a few of the shots,” he added, “at least I don’t have to teach in the morning,”

Well he was supposed to be a chaperone but Cutter really wasn’t one to follow the rules.

"Exactly," said Summer with a grin. "That's the whole point! We may be here as chaperones, but we deserve a little vacation, too. And maybe the kids deserve at least one morning when they can cut loose just a little bit, too."

Even though there were probably still plenty of chaperones still unaccounted for at the party who could be the responsible ones.

Cutter grinned at that, “honestly after the last few months, I could do with one night of not dealing with everything back home,” he considered.

There was definitely going to be a lot of drinking involved.

"Oh?"

Hearing about people's messed up problems back home was totally Summer's jam! Consider her intrigued!

She peered over at him as she took a sip of some champagne that she wasn't about to let go to waste and sort of broke up the jello shots a little bit.

"What sort of things are you dealing with back home?"

“One of our recent experiences through an anomaly, somehow changed the present timeline only no one else but me seems to remember the changes, there was a woman,” Cutter sighed. “her name was Claudia Brown, she disappeared from the timeline and she now has a doppelgänger called Jenny Lewis,”

That change still hurt, he still missed Claudia.

“Not to mention finding out my supposed best friend had an affair with my ex wife while we were still married,”

Cutter’s solution to deal with all of that had been to take a job teaching high school students in another country.

"Jenny Lewis?" asked Summer. "Like...the singer?"

What? Rilo Kiley slapped.

But that last part definitely earned the biggest oof of all.

"Okay, yeah," she allowed, "this is hands-down, no contest better than all of that. That really sucks, dude."

“I must admit I’m not quite familiar with the singer,” Cutter admitted.

He nodded, “so everyone thinks I’m freaking out about the affair and that I’ve made up Claudia, in response” he sighed, well that was more Lester who had voiced that opinion, he still remembered the curt you’re too old for imaginary friends Professor.

“So I applied for a teaching job at the last minute here,” he shrugged, “I suppose getting a free holiday out of it is not too bad,” he had even been turning up to teach his classes, that was more than he could say about his university teaching job.

"You should totally look her up," Summer insisted with a nod. "She's great."

And, you know, a fellow redhead, so solidarity.

"And, well...I'm glad you were able to get away from all of that," she added, "but sometimes avoiding it doesn't really do much except having it come around to just bite you in the ass."

She paused, then amended.

"Harder than it already has, anyway."

If only Cutter had some way of knowing just how true that was, it definitely wasn’t going to end well.

“Well I do like collecting records,” Cutter considered, “I might have to stop by the music store in town,”

He had been meaning to do that for a few weeks.

“I’ll talk to him ...I just … “ Cutter shrugged, “we were friends for years, I know I wasn’t the most attentive husband, I was always busy but it … it hurt finding out like I did,” he admitted.

"Ohmygod," said Summer, "I don't think Tisarwat would know what to do if she got an actual customer; you should totally do that."

A slight pause.

"And I'm pretty sure it would hurt finding out in any way," she pointed out. "But still, that's just pretty shitty all around."
