MHA #4; Saturday Evening - Stark's Surprise Birthday Bash! [01/14].

By the time she expected the first guests to start filtering, Summer had managed to make her apartment look like a very blue-gold-specific explosion had happened in a Party City somewhere, and all the shrapnel somehow wound up in her living room and kitchen. From the balloons to the streamers hanging from the ceiling to the banners, there was no mistaking that a birthday party was going on here, in all its blue and gold and star themed glory.

Was it a bit much? Probably. Cheesy? Definitely. But it was the dude's first birthday party; it was allowed to be. In fact, Summer might argue that it was required to be exactly this level of obnoxious, thank you very much.

She got some music playing, went to get some of the food set out in the dining room and the drink offerings set up in the kitchen, and then she just had to wait for a good amount of people to show up before she'd text the man of the hour to get him down here.

"Well, congratu-fucking-lations," Margo said, mouth curving. "It's about time you did."

"Is it? Maybe that's why she picked now. I don't know. We've talked about just deciding on a birthday before and I told her she could do it but I didn't really think...I thought we were just talking. But this is..." Stark paused, looked down, and then back up.

"A little overwhelming. But in a good way, I think."

"It better be, this looks like a ton of effort," Margo said. "I mean, I could've done it better, but not by much."

She eyed Stark. "Have you unwrapped your gifts yet?"

"No," Stark said like the idea of presents hadn't even occurred to him. Because the idea hadn't even occurred to him. "I've just been trying to take all of this in. And having jello. And cupcakes."

"Can't argue with that," Margo said, taking a further step back so she could pick up her drink. "You're going to want to touch mine by the ear a couple of times."

So he could switch between butterflies, flowers, cupcakes, and an even classy white.

Margo was all about letting people coordinate.

"You brought a gift?" Stark asked. Sure, that was somewhat expected for birthdays but this was all very new to him.

"That has ears?"

"I'm not gonna spoil you for your birthday gift, honey," Margo said wrily. "You'll figure it out when you open it."

"You didn't need to bring anything," Stark told her. "But thank you. Should I go look now? Or later?"

Another amused look.

"It's your birthday, Stark," she said. "You decide when you're gonna do what."

"Oh." That hadn't occurred to him either. There were so many things that hadn't occurred to Stark.

"It's my first time. I don't know how it all works."

"It's a special day where everyone bends over backwards to give you what they hope you want, and you sacrifice hours of your day to be at a party where they can do that," Margo offered. "And in return you get to do whatever the fuck you want."

"This is all already more than enough."

Stark was currently feeling happier than he had in a very long time. Happier and a little more sure of himself.

"I might save gifts for later."

"Go wild," Margo said, and took a sip of her drink. "Steal off with the boxes when you're drunk in the middle of the night."

"I don't think I'll still be here in the middle of the night," Stark said. "Unless I can't even make it up the stairs. I only live upstairs. Number 8. I'd have to be very drunk."

Which could happen. There were plenty of drinks and he hadn't even tried what Margo had brought yet.

Yeah, all Margo did was nod sideways at the jello shots.

"I try not to get that drunk. Usually."

Summer's 21st birthday had been an exception for a number of reasons. "But these are all for me and I really ought to try everything and some of them glow...what did you bring?"

It was possible Stark would end up his birthday party passed out on Summer's floor or couch. Or needing an escort up the stairs.

"Gin," Margo supplied, tapping the clear bottle. "And... one of Eliot's magical mystery cocktails." She grinned, patting the grey container lovingly.

"What does it do?" Stark asked.

Because obviously the word "mystery" in there meant Margo would just tell him.

"Nice try," Margo said, amused.

"Will I regret trying it?" Stark asked. "Or will it be alright?"

"Would I bring shitty booze to your party to fuck you up on your birthday, Stark?" Margo asked, frowning.

Admittedly, that line would probably work much better here than at home, considering the amount of people she'd roofied at Brakebills for the Trials. But on the other hand, doing anything to a sweet ~~meta-for~~ Muggle on his birthday really would be a little on the mean side.

"I don't think so," Stark said. "But I've been surprised before. I'll try it."

He didn't really think anything would happen but if it did there were plenty of people around if he needed them.

"You've got to learn to have a little faith," Margo said, and looked entirely too amused, and took a dainty sip of her gin.

Though probably not in her.

"In what?" Stark asked as he reached for a cup, then hesitated before picking up the container Margo had indicated. "Do you want some?"

"In me, at least where parties are involved," Margo said, ignoring her own narrative. She drained her glass of gin and held it out. "Sure, hit me."
