It had taken a bit to get there, but the whirlwind of Summer's burst of party planning was finally coming to frution. There had been the flyers, of course, some good radio coverage, and the ubitquitously handwaved mass text, so hopefully people knew about it enough to show up. Especially since a lot of work had been put into making Goose's apartment party ready. For one thing, it actually had furniture, plenty of sofas and ottomans for the guests to sit, arranged to also allow for a lot of standing and gathering room (and, yes, yes, for all the wall flowers, a few meticulously curated shadowy corners, you're welcome. But most of the decor attention would probably be put into the magic work Summer had Margo and Eliot do.

With the faint scent of rose and mint in the air, the entire ceiling was cloaked in the vastness of outer space. But not just any space, because, in Summer's experience, space was actually kind of boring, so they pumped it up, they amped the colors, they filled it with a ton of glitter (of course). Distant planets and swirls of galaxies and pulsating quasars dotted the starscape in swatches of pink and purple and green, some glowing bright with neon. Shooting stars would occasionally trail overhead and across the walls, leaving behind a dusting of color and glitter and occasionally a message that called out "Happy Birthday, Goose!" with another message trailing behind it that read "(And Gladio, too!)". Occsionally, the starscape would seem to swell a little and expand, so that, on occasion, it would feel as though you weren't just looking at it, but almost being surrounded by space until it moved on.

The spare bedroom had been converted into a karaoke room, there was a jello table and a tended bar set up, with an ice luge embedded with neon lights, and a keg all dolled up to look like a container of Cup Noodle. And speaking of Cup Noodle, don't anyone forget Cup Noodle gift bags! There's plenty for everyone, at a table by the door, so you can help yourself to that excellent tote filled with some of the most random (and pretty moddable) chintzy Cup Noodle junk Summer could find on cheap Chinese websites (the real highlights, though, robably being the slippers and the candle).

The kitchen, of course, was dedicated to be the haven of Ignis, who staunchly refused to do anything Cup Noodle related for his food offerings, which, if you asked Summer, were a bit much for a party where she was hoping everyone would be quickly too drunk to care about what they were putting in their mouths, but, hey, you do you, Specs.

She'd even hired a bouncer, mostly for raccoons, but also for students, let's be real, and since she usually hired Gladio for that position, putting in Billy this time around seemed like the obvious choice, and she was even being very, very good about not just calling him Wish Gladio or Walmart Gladio or Budget Gladio tonight.

And, just like that, this party was ready to get started!

"And I thought I had a lot to catch up on with all the D&D rule updates and new source material that came out in the meantime," Steph said wryly. To be fair, there had been a lot of them. "Please tell me work isn't the only thing you do?"

"Not the only thing," Will said defensively. "I take Kol- my dog- for walks. And, uh. Sometimes Steve drags me off to the mainland for laser tag?"

"I guess that's a start," Steph decided, "and recent rabies scares aside, the general chill-ness of the clinic here probably balances out your mainland job. You have a dog?"

"Uh huh," Will beamed at her. "He's the best." Even if how he'd ended up with Kol was... not a happy story, like, at all.

Careful, Steph, he was like thisclose to breaking out the iPhone camera roll of doggo pictures.

"Nice. I'm more of a cat person myself, but dogs are awesome too," replied Steph, who would not dissuade a person from breaking out the pet photo camera roll. "Not that I have one myself at the moment."

She really should fix that.

"Why is he the best, though? I'm actually really curious to hear your argument on the matter."

What? Hearing people go on about their pets was fun. Mostly.

Apart from 'every dog is Best Dog'?

"Well," Will said, "First off, I've been wanting to teach him tricks, you know? But the problem is... he already knows everything I try to teach him."

If Steph still hosted a radio show she'd probably start an "Every dog is Best Dog" call-in segment, have callers throw down against each other. It'd be hilarious.

"I'd say you must save so much on dog treats that way, but I've met dog owners before."

"No kidding," Will snorted. "Did you know it's not just puppies who can do the puppy eyes thing?"

Steph was friends with Vi. She was aware.

"It is a disturbingly widespread skill," she said mock-solemnly.

And he hadn’t even been thinking about people doing the puppy eyes (even though there were absolutely more than a few who would accuse him of weaponizing his own from time to time, shh).

“He’s conned so many cheeseburgers out of me just by looking cute,” Will told her. “Also he’s really good at like- knowing when I’m upset or angry or whatever, cause he’ll come over and demand cuddles and then things just aren’t as bad, you know?”

Part of him suspected Kol had been trained as a therapy dog, based on some reading he’d done. But thinking about that too much led down a path he wasn’t sure he wanted to go down.

"Awwww," Steph said, and not even mockingly. "Dogs are good at that kind of thing. Cats just leave you to sort your shit out on your own."

No, Steph, that was just Valkyrie, who by all accounts still hadn't quite warmed up to Alex yet.

"Cats do have that whole rumbly-purr thing going on though," Will pointed out.

"Sure," Steph allowed. "But like... on their own terms, and nothing we poor lowly humans can say will convince them otherwise. The cat I had back in Colorado did that maybe once."

"Just makes it more special when they do do it though," Will said. Look, yeah, he was a dog owner. That didn't mean he couldn't also appreciate the potential adorableness of a cat.

"True," Steph conceded. "That one time was like winning the fucking lottery."

As for the rest of the time, there was a reason she'd called Valkyrie the record store devil cat.

"Bro, you know I'm still waiting for you to bust out the dog pictures, right?"

"Yeah, yeah, okay," Will laughed, pulling out his phone and bringing up the album that contained dozens of pictures of an adorable Icelandic sheepdog. ~~Though the player wishes there were better screencaps out there, alas~~

Steph leaned over to look, and --

"Awwwwwwwww! Excellent doggo, eleven out of ten stars. Looks like he gives excellent cuddles."
