So, the place that Summer had settled on for the double date tonight was a bit more than a stone's throw away from where they were staying, but, you know what? That was fine. It was a major city, getting around it would be easy enough and that meant that not only were they going to have an experience a little different and unique from everyone sticking near the hotel, but they'd also get to see more of the city itself, and that was not necessarily a bad thing.

Also, getting reservations at some of these small but highly acclaimed sushi places was not easy, so the fact that Summer was able to snag one here for that evening was not something she could just pass up.

And while a cozy little sushi place with the full experience of having the chef right there at the counter to make it for you was not at all what she originally had in mind for tonight when she first thought of it, she did feel it would be a little more suited to the group as a whole as something more quiet and personal, and, plus, you know, that authentic experience. She'd have plenty of time for the bigger, brighter, more over-the-top side of Tokyo later.

But for now? Just a nice little dinner date with a super genius, a space wizard, and a pirate, as she settled into one of the chairs at the counter that had been reserved for them and really, really hoped she hadn't been way off base for what Rey and John might enjoy while planning this out.

"I've never done this before," Rey warned, taking a seat and peering at the other side of the counter to watch the chef.

"I'd let the chef pick out what to make for you," Barry suggested. "There's vegetarian options if the thought of some raw fish scares you but these types of places would never serve you something that wasn't good. But I'll warn you, they probably won't have Dr. Pepper here."

"Oh, I am not picky," Rey assured him. If it wasn't alive and didn't actively look like it might kill her somehow, she'd eat it. "Shame about the Dr. Pepper though."

She wasn't picky on that either.

"Well since there isn't that you should probably try Ramune," Barry said pointing to one of the bottles on display which had a pinched neck bottle and a bead of glass at the top. "My friend Jeremy can't get enough of it and orders like six of them whenever we hit a Japanese steak house back home. You have to bash the top in with the plastic thing which releases the bead. It's kind of a novelty thing but the original flavor is pretty good."

"Sure, I can try that," Rey said. "I've never had to... bash my drink before."

"That's kind of the point," Summer noted with a faint grin. "What's the point in going somewhere new and different if you're not going to try ay least a few things you haven't done before?"

"I can do that," Rey said. "Mainly I just don't know how you do all this."

"If you don't know what you want," Summer suggested, "you can just ask for the chef's speciality, and he'll pick what's best for the day. This place has got an amazing reputation, so I'd say you can trust him with pretty much anything. And then you get to watch him put it together, see how it's made, while you wait."

"Oh, I can do that," Rey decided. "I'm not used to watching my food be made."

She was going to find it fascinating.

Barry bowed his head politely at the chef as he took his seat. "始めまして. 私は菜食主義者ですが、好きなものを自由に選んでください。私はあなたのテーブルに座ってあなたの食べ物に参加することを光栄に思います," he said making sure to take his time with the pronunciation and not butcher it with his American accent. He did anyway but the chef smiled in appreciation of the effort.

Barry smiled. "Fuck yeah. Let's eat some fucking sushi."

"Ohmygod," said Summer, but fondly, "you are such a nerd."

Newsflash of the century, over here.

"What did you even say?"

"I told him my girlfriend was the hot one so don't fucking try to hit on her," Barry joked. "And that he could feed me whatever the fuck he wanted and I'd eat it. I'll make exceptions for having sushi in Tokyo."

Which would have been a great and super appreciated joke if it weren't for Rey literally sitting right there, being, in Summer's opinion, categorically much hotter by every metric, up to including even having the way hotter accent.

So she just quipped back, "I'm sure John'll be relieved to know he can enjoy his dinner in peace without being hit on, then.

"And that's a bold move, but, like, with the reviews this place gets, I'm honestly thinking of pretty much doing the same."

"Well I figure he wouldn't like the press if one of us dies so I'm pretty sure giving him free reign is a safe bet. Plus I read once that if you eat what the chef likes you're usually in for a good time," Barry said smiling.

Silver did not realize sushi was a thing but, whatever, he'd give it a go. Couldn't be worse than his own cooking.

"You know the last time I had raw fish I caught the shark myself."

"Shit! Seriously? That's pretty fucking badass," Barry said looking impressed. "And you can't start with that and not tell us the fucking story."

"Uh, well, we sailed into a hurricane." To avoid the British Navy. "And after we were caught in doldrums--uh, basically there was no wind after the storm so we were stuck for weeks in the same spot. We were going to starve to death and since the captain and I were the only ones with any strength left it was up to us to go out and try to find something."

He was just going to skip over the fighting and tension and a man being shot in the head before they came to that decision.

"So we took a rowboat out and harpooned a shark."

Okay. Now Barry was really impressed. "Holy fuck, dude. I like how you just toss out 'we sailed into a hurricane' and then just say you harpooned a shark from a fucking rowboat. That's fucking cool," Barry said shaking his head. "That fucking story alone deserves some sake."

Signalling one of the servers he politely asked in Japanese for some of their best sake for Silver.

"What year were you from again?"

"1715," Silver replied. He wasn't exactly sure what sake was but if it was alcohol, he'd try it. "I'm not sure if that story is cool or if it's absolutely insane."

It was probably both.

"You caught a shark?" Rey asked, thinking it was probably different than watching Luke harpoon something off a cliff.

"Flint and I did," Silver said with a nod. "We were stuck at sea and it was to keep from starving."

"That's actually really impressive," she told him.

Which is what you want to hear on a date, so.

"And the last time I had to deal with a shark," Summer offered with a grin, "I think, was when one crashed through my dorm room. It took both me and my roommate a lot of work to push it back out again, so that's, like, really impressive."

But not surprising, really.

You know. Because pirate.

"Did it crash through the window or the door?" He didn't know why that was the part that he was having a hard time picturing.

"Oh, no," said Summer, shaking her head. "Forget windows and doors. This guy came crashing through the whole wall. During a hurricane. It was super fun."

And that was super sarcasm.
