The Smith Residence; Earth Dimension [Replacement]; 08/23.
A portal opened in the ceiling of the garage of the Smith house, spitting out the bodies of Rick and his two grandchildren. They had barely landed on the cold cement before Morty started complaining. "Summer! Next time we're hiding in a Chlorkian echo nest, can you do me a favor and turn your ringer off?"
And Summer was not even bothered. "It's called carpe diem, Morty. Look it up?"
"You look it up! You don't...y-you don't even know what it means."
"That's because losers look stuff up while the rest of us are carp'en all them diems."
That earned her a cool low five from Rick, whose attention had already gone into tinkering around with some sort of gun at the countertop. "Listen to your sister, Morty. To live is to risk it all. Otherwise, you're just an inert chunk of randomly assembled molecules drifting wherever the universe blows you. Oh, I'm sorry. Jerry. I didn't see you there. How much of that did you hear?"
"All of it," said Jerry, who was standing at the threshold of the open garage door. "You were looking right at me." But he didn't want to get into it now. He sighed. "I just...wanted to say good-bye to the kids."
"Cool, just stay in the driveway," said Rick, returning to his work on the gun. "The killbots are live and I just took you off the white list."
Summer took a hot second to consider the situation and decided to go right back over with Rick. Upset about the divorce? Upset that the only time her dad finally decided to not be a spineless jerkwad involved breaking up their family? Whatever. She was thinking she'd rather be associate with people who broke up Galactic Federations and saved her life, thanks.
Morty was a bit more forgiving. "I'll see you every other weekend, though, right?" he asked, edging closer, but seeming too nervous to get too close.
"Absolutely, Morty," Jerry assured him. "A-and your mom's lawyer says that if I can get enough in the settlement, he can help me sue for full custody."
"That'll be nice," said Morty. "Uhhh, Summer? Dad's leaving?"
Summer half-heartedly lifted a hand. "Bye, Dad. Rick, didn't you say you needed my help on an adventure immediately somewhere else, I don't care, even if it might kill us?"
"I did not," said Rick. "But if you're really that alienated, I'm as willing to exploit it as much as the next guy, church, army, or Olympic gymnastics trainer."
He wasted no time shooting a portal open in the floor, just as Summer wasted no time in grinning and jumping in. "I'm ready when you are," she said.
"Bitch," said Rick, jumping in after her. "I was ready yesterday."
There was a slightly awkward pause. "Bye, sweetie," said Jerry to the open portal.
"Well..." Morty started to inch backwards closer to the portal. "I-I better..."
"Sure," Jerry said. "Sounds important."
Morty jumped in, and where one portal closed, another door open. The door to the garage, Beth stepping out to find only Jerry there. "If you're looking for our kids," he said, "your father did a...uh...portal..."
"Okay," said Beth, turning right back around and going into the house.
Leaving Jerry nothing left to do but turn around and leave as well, into the driveway, with his U-To trailer waiting with what meager belongings he had left to his name. And as he stood contemplating all the things that had gone wrong, finally, seemingly destroyed once and for all, a wind stirred, disturbing a wind chime in the neighbor's yard, causing the leaves to dance and brush against the concrete, almost like they were whispering softly.
Looooooserrrrrr.
"What? Hello?"
But no one was there.
