So Summer was more than happy to duck out of work early to drag Liz to the mainland so she could (hopefully) find the woman a goddamn dress for this wedding that she was apparently supposed to help plan by Christmas (it was fine; it was great, actually, Summer worked best under pressure and with a tight as hell deadline), and if anything was going to spark her inspiration to really start working on it, it was going to be shopping. Granted, her whole experience with Annie's wedding had spoiled her rotten, and she would have preferred portaling out to New York or Paris or whatever, but she knew this was definitely more Liz's pace...and budget.

(Not that that mattered, of course, because Summer was footing the bill for the dress as a wedding present, but it wasn't her wedding, after all).

So she arranged an appointment at this conveniently vague boutique that promised to have a good amount of maternity dresses on hand for the expecting bride, and Summer made quick work of picking out a few to start with so that Liz could try them on and they could start getting a feel for the right direction. She gave them a cursory glance before grinning over at Liz.

"Alright," she said. "Let's get this show on the road."

Liz was feeling a little nervous about dress shopping and she was grateful that Summer was here to help her choose because even just looking at the options on Pinterest had been overwhelming.

She smiled, taking a deep breath to steady herself and nodded as she looked at the selection that Summer had to start with, “thank you again for helping me,” she added.

"Well," said Summer, almost a little sweetly and with a reassuring hand on Liz's shoulder, "we all know you need all the help you can get."

She mostly meant it encouragingly? Kind of?

"So," she then forged forward, "where do you want to start? Anything in particular you want to try first?"

Liz knew she really did need help so did take it as good encouragement.

“I think I’d like to try this one first,” she settled on as she had a look at the dresses Summer had picked out.

Summer looked like she was trying to cover a doubtful look with an encouraging smile.

"It's definitely a start," she offered generously, but she had to admit, she was a little curious now what kind of path they were about to follow until they came across the one.

Liz hesitated, “do you think I should try a different one first?” she looked back over the dresses in case she found something else to try first.

"I think," said Summer, "you should try what you want to try first. I'm not wearing it. I'm just here to guide you away from anything too regrettable, and you'll never know how something is going to look unless you try it on. I," her hand pressed to her chest, "couldn't pull off that much top-lace with that much skirt, personally, but, again, not my dress."

Liz nodded as she thought the options and pulled another dress to try as well, “how about I try this one as well?” she considered.

"Well, you can only try one on at a time anyway," Summer pointed out. "And you should try on what you want to try on, that's kind of the whole point."

Liz nodded, “okay I’ll try these ones on first,” she looked for the dressing rooms, “are they the dressing rooms over there?”

"Yup," Summer said with a nod, confirming the direction, "right over there, and around the corner, to make it more dramatic when you step out to reveal the dress, probably."

Liz let out a nervous giggle, “okay I’ll try on the first dress,” and then she went to the dressing room, tried it on and made her way back round the corner,

“What do you think?” she asked nervously, giving a little twirl as she did.

There really was a lot of lace wasn’t there?

Summer grinned a little, extremely pleased to see Liz actually throw a little flair in there with that twirl, which actually helped the dress out a little, too.

"I think," she stated, with a nod as she confirmed her suspicions about it when Liz grabbed it, "that it looks like a nightgown. I feel like you should be haunting the dark, shadowy halls of some decrepted old seaside manor with a candelabra because your jealous husband murdered you when he discovered you were carrying the stableboy's child instead of his.

"That said," she added, after a moment's pause, "I do like the way it moves. It's got good flow."

“It does feel like a good fit,” Liz mused as she glanced down at the dress, “and it feels comfortable,”

Then she considered what else Summer pointed out about the dress, “I think I might try the other dresses first, see how they compare,” she decided.

'A good fit' was not exactly what Summer was going for with that description, but it was very interesting to her that that was how Liz apparently took it.

"Yeah, no," she said, "there's no way you can just pick the first dress you try on. This is gonna be a whole thing. You're going to be sick of dresses by the time we're done. Except the one you go with. That's how you'll know. Or something."

“I didn’t think it was going to be the first dress I tried,” Liz admitted, “at least there a lot more different dresses I can try, right?”

Liz looked at the second dress she had picked out, she wasn’t feeling as nervous now about trying on dresses.

Summer nodded a little, her head moving toward the dressing room as if to nudge Liz along toward it for the next one, while also asking, "Is there anything in particular you know you definitely want? Like, a for-sure must have?"

“I always liked the idea of a wedding dress that was long sleeved and with a veil,” Liz admitted, “even though veils are really old fashioned aren’t they?”
