Some Chic Little Boutique in Annie's New York; Thursday [12/30].

Okay, okay, sure, they could have gone dress shopping literally anywhere in the multiverse, but of course Summer would want to be that kind of extra to not only pick New York, but also to pick the version of New York where one of her friends was literally one of the biggest celebrities ever.

It was all about catching a certain vibe, okay? Just let her have this.

And the place she'd found was super cute and had an almost stupidly impressive array of options available, and she was pretty sure that if they couldn't find a perfect dress for Rey for New Year's here, then....

Well, it was New York. They had options.

And, yes, the main goal was to find something for Rey, but honestly, Summer couldn't help being a little distracted.

"Oooooooh."

Was it...too late to completely overhaul and redo the whole ~look~ she had planned for herself and Barry? It totally wasn't too late, right??

"See something you like?" Rey teased, checking out what the oooh was all about. "That's beautiful."

"I want to add, like, half of this store to my wardrobe," said Summer, clinging onto the skirt of the dress as if it would run away. "Do I have that many places to wear them all to? No. Will I make up shit to fix that? Abso-lutely.

"Maybe," she added, in a flash of inspiration, "there should be quick changes tomorrow!"

But her grin seemed to switch to a different idea as she took the dress off the rack and held it out toward Rey.

"Unleeeesssss...."

Her brow quirked enticing. Sure, it wasn't black, buuut....

"I like it, but it might be too fancy for me," Rey said. "This is more you or Annie."

They could do glamorous.

And so could Rey!

"I meaaaaan," said Summer, giving it an oh-so-enticing shake, "how can you know unless you try it?"

Besides, if Rey tried it on and looked fabulous in it, then Summer could be more willing to let it go, since there'd be no way she could look even close to that good in it!

"I'll try it. Because I asked for help, and I'm being open-minded." Look at that. Growth. "I think I'm thinking a little more casual."

And yet her friends could still see her in fancy dresses.

Annie was completely shrouded in a hoodie, a set of huge sunglasses -- yes, indoors -- and had her hair back in a deliberately-messy ponytail.

Normally, she might have put together something closer to how she was planning to look tomorrow night just for effective shopping, but Starlight was smiling at them from a bus that just passed by, soooooo....

"Very slinky," she decided, catching the oooh-ing. "I love a long dress."

Like, on other people. Hers was going to be kind of short.

Well. With those legs...

"Oh, me, too," Summer gushed, "but I did do long last year, but ohmygod, velvet and sequins? Yes. Please. Thank you. Brilliant!"

A brief, considering, wistful pause.

"I should do more velvet."

"I mean, now's the time. It's kind of a, like, wintry fabric," Annie pointed out. "You should just have, like, a fancy Wednesday night at the bar. Wear velvet and sequins to work, act like Tino forgot he was supposed to, too. Maybe integrate a tiara."

Annie actually sort of considered a similarly velvet-y number, but then fell into an exaggerated, smiley wave-off of a saleswoman who started to approach her. God, she was going to have to, like, pretend she couldn't talk when they checked out. (Ooh, or maybe she could do a fake voice.)

"Do you know what you want yet?" Rey asked her, looking through dresses. "Or do you have something?"

"I think I've got something," Annie said with a nod, even as she appreciatively thumbed through a rack of accessories. "At this point, I'm kind of looking for, like, shoes and jewelry. Are you thinking pants again? Or are you open to a dress?"

It did not have to be a dress Summer or Annie would wear.

"I could maybe do a dress," Rey said slowly, and then added, "But it depends on the dress. No pink or... floof, for instance."

"I think you'd look good in dark pink," Annie offered, sifting through a rack. "Not like a Summer pink or a good witch pink, but like a dark raspberry or magenta would be great with your coloring."

Just to say! Pink was sort of an acquired taste, but it didn't all have to be ruled out!

"And I would never put you in floof," she added reassuringly. "Not with your muscles. Like, girl." Sleek was the name of the game for Rey, as far as Annie was concerned.

"Muscles don't go with floof?" she asked, suddenly looking more critically through the rack.

There was so much she hadn't ever considered!

"Floof just kind of obscures things," Annie said carefully. "Whereas something strappy -- maybe an exposed back? -- would showcase what you've got. In a classy way."

After the year she'd had, Annie was now something of an expert in the various means of showing off one's assets.

"This is why I couldn't do this myself," Rey said, pulling out something with a kind of exposed back. "Isn't something like this a lot though?"

"I mean, the sparkles are pretty New Years-y," Annie reminded her, considering the dress. "That's super cute. Mine is kind of similar to that, but in white." And fringed, because God help her. "Do you want to go that short? You could also do something with, like, one shoulder? Women with nice arms always kind of rock that look."

She credited Michelle Obama and Queen Maeve for that opinion, personally.

She pulled a dress off the rack as an example, making a little face. "But not in beige." It was even less of a color than black.

"I actually like the color," said Rey, Queen of Neutrals. "I like it, but it feels more elegant than I am."

Apparently her un-fanciness was a thing to get hung up on today.

Annie frowned, putting the dress back and sliding her sunglasses down her nose so she could fix Rey with a look. "Do I look like someone who's naturally elegant?" she asked, gesturing to the whole hoodie and jeans and very un-Starlit situation she was deliberately rocking today. (And, honestly, pretty much every day in Fandom, sans the sunglasses and whatnot.) "That's what dressing up is about."

"You could put this on and look like you belong in it," Rey told her. It was actually something she envied about Annie. "I'll try it, but I might want more, I don't know, casual?"

Which was so easy with fancy dress, Rey.

"You'd look like you belong in it just as much. It just takes, like, practice to be comfortable in it all. But we could ditch the sparkles," Annie offered, flicking through dresses and selecting a different shoulder-showcasing number. "Much as it pains me to suggest such a thing."

But actually, this one was real cute. Sexy and flattering without being all showy. If she hadn't already picked out a spangly little thing for herself, Annie might be considering this dress for herself.

"Do they have that in not red?" It was so pretty, and a lot for someone who had only ever done real color under flirty duress.

"What do you have against red?" Annie asked, teasing and totally not putting the dress back or even looking for an alternate color yet. "It's not pink."

It was a little attention-y, sure, but on New Year's Eve? When Summer had worn a hot pink evening gown last year? Pff. Annie was at least gonna insist this thing was tried on.

"There are some things a person needs to ease into," Rey joked.

"It comes in white," Annie noted, relenting a little. "But you should try on the red one, too. And if you go with white or a neutral, you should do, like, bold shoes. Or a bold lip."

Or both.

"I'll try it on," Rey agreed. "But I only know like three makeup things."

One was covering up hickeys. The rest had come because she was already doing that much.

"Well, fortunately you know some people who know more makeup things," Annie pointed out with a broad gesture to encapsulate both herself and Summer. "Makeup things are one of the keys to looking like you fit in with fancy people."

Makeup was one of the main reasons Annie wouldn't get recognized immediately if she actually did take her sunglasses off.

"I love you two," Rey told her, eyeing sparkly sleeves. "This doesn't seem too short?"

And it was balanced out by sleeves? Maybe?

"If you're going to hide your arms, I fully support you showing off your abs," Annie decided, eyeing the outfit critically. "Maybe John can wear something that shows off his, too, to match."

What? She was joking, but it would be, like, a public service. And then Diego could go sleeveless to match her, and you would all be welcome for that.

"But no, seriously, I love it." And she would probably come to envy sleeve-having, personally.

"Hopefully it's not too much." It really wasn't, and she'd still end up tugging it down all night. "I'll try it. Though I'm not sure John would be taking anything off in the winter."

He was a giant baby about the cold and she thought it was adorable because he was worse than her about it.

"Sad for us," Annie decided, considering the outfit and Rey together now. "You know what would be cute with that? Tall boots. Cozy, too."

With a tall heel, but they could work up to that.

This was smart, Annie. This was so smart.

"I do like boots..." Yes, boots being almost the only shoes she wore save for that anniversary pair.

"I mean, I wear semi-formal boots for work," Annie noted with an uneasy glance towards the sales staff. "They can be pretty comfortable. And something up to your knee would be, like, darling."

And maybe with a stiletto heel to really accentuate the leg, but Annie was wisely going to hold that part back for now.

"And then if the skirt is short then that makes it better." She might not think that when she had to sit down but that was tomorrow's problem. "Thank you for this."

"'Course. And you know I'll help with whatever you want to do hair or makeup-wise," Annie assured her. "I've shifted from thinking you need a bold lip to dramatic eye makeup, by the way."

Which was relatively familiar territory, so hooray for that!

"I trust you," Rey told her. "And the hair will be very easy. It's everywhere else I'm clueless."

The easiest, really.
